Léon Marchand backed after political debate criticism

Léon Marchand has received public backing after facing criticism for refusing to take a clear political position. The French swimmer said he preferred to stay away from political debate, while recognising that athletes could have an important influence in the years ahead. He also said he did not yet feel qualified to speak on the subject and did not want to make careless comments.

Marchand’s cautious response has drawn several days of criticism on social media, including a racist insult directed at the 24-year-old. The controversy comes as France looks towards its 2027 presidential election, a period in which athletes may again face pressure to comment on public issues.

Speaking on TMC programme Quotidien, journalist Jean-Michel Aphatie judged Marchand’s position to be restrained, clear-minded and intelligent. He said the swimmer was right not to speak on a subject when he did not feel legitimate to do so, while condemning those who had attacked him.

The debate concerns a four-time Olympic champion and seven-time world champion whose public influence extends beyond the pool. Marchand has not rejected the possibility that athletes could play a decisive role in coming years, but has chosen not to claim a political voice before he feels ready to use it responsibly.
