Liberia and Mali share points in UFOA-A U17 opener

Liberia and Mali have begun their UFOA-A Under-17 tournament campaigns with one point apiece, leaving neither team with an early advantage in the qualification race for the Africa Cup of Nations U17. The result keeps Group B open after the two teams were unable to separate themselves in their first match.

Liberia moved ahead shortly after the interval through Prince Smith. The Lone Stars could not hold that lead for long, however, as Mali found an equaliser soon afterwards. The response prevented Liberia from turning its opening pressure into a winning start and gave Mali a share of the points on its tournament debut.

Both teams continued to search for the goal that would settle the match, but their attempts did not produce another change to the score. The final whistle therefore confirmed a 1-1 draw, with the points divided between the two sides. Neither team has yet created the advantage that a victory would have provided at the beginning of the competition.

The group’s situation is unusual because it now contains only three teams. Guinea-Bissau was disqualified, reducing the number of available fixtures and leaving less room for teams to recover from dropped points. Liberia and Mali will therefore view the draw as a mixed result: each has avoided defeat, but neither has taken the lead that comes with winning the opening match. Their next fixtures will determine whether this shared point becomes a useful start or a missed opportunity in the pursuit of CAN U17 qualification.
