Ligue 1: Djibril Sidibé Sent Off After 42 Seconds at Rennes
Djibril Sidibé’s Le Mans debut lasted 42 seconds before a direct red card, and Rennes scored a stoppage-time penalty to win a frantic Ligue 1 contest 3-2.
Djibril Sidibé endured a nightmare first appearance for Le Mans as the promoted club lost 3-2 at Rennes. The former France international entered the match in the 68th minute, but his debut ended only 42 seconds later when referee Romain Lissorgue showed him a direct red card. Le Mans had recovered from two goals down before the dismissal changed the final stage of the match.
Sidibé came on for Lucas Calodat with the score level at 2-2. Rennes had taken control early through Estéban Lepaul, who opened the scoring in the fifth minute, and Valentin Rongier, who made it 2-0 in the 26th minute at Roazhon Park. Le Mans responded before half-time when Louis Mafouta reduced the deficit in the 30th minute.
Mafouta, a 32-year-old forward, completed the comeback nine minutes after the restart. His goal in the 54th minute brought Le Mans level and gave the visitors a chance to take something from a match that had become open and fast-moving. The equaliser also ended the immediate effect of Rennes’ strong opening and put the promoted side back into contention.
The decisive incident came soon after Sidibé’s introduction. The 34-year-old right-back arrived late on Lepaul and made contact with the attacker’s ankle without touching the ball. The challenge was described as involuntary, but the nature of the contact led Lissorgue to issue a direct red card. Le Mans were therefore reduced to 10 players with more than 20 minutes of normal time still remaining.
Rennes continued to press after the dismissal, while Le Mans attempted to protect the point secured by Mafouta’s second goal. The visitors held on through the remainder of regulation time, but the numerical disadvantage proved decisive in stoppage time. Lepaul won and converted a penalty in the sixth additional minute to complete his double and give Rennes the 3-2 victory.
The result also placed Lepaul among the leading scorers in the early Ligue 1 standings. He scored in the fifth minute before adding the late penalty, giving him three goals in the competition. That total was also matched by Mafouta and Florian Thauvin in the scoring race. Rennes’ victory left the club with four points from two matches and fourth place, according to the competition position reported after the game.
The database’s current Ligue 1 record lists Le Mans in seventh place with one point from one match. It records two goals scored and two conceded, while the club’s recent sequence is three wins, one draw and one defeat: 1-0 against Nantes, 3-1 against Versailles, 2-3 against La Roche VF, 2-0 at Bastia and 1-1 against Reims. Those figures provide the current statistical snapshot for the promoted side as it adjusts to the top flight.
Sidibé had joined Le Mans during the summer to bring the experience of a 2018 World Cup winner to the club’s return to Ligue 1. He has 18 France caps and a career that includes his time at Monaco, but his first competitive appearance for Le Mans lasted less than a minute. The red card means his early contribution was defined by the foul rather than by any opportunity to settle into the match.
For Le Mans, the match showed both the team’s ability to respond under pressure and the cost of losing a player during a tight finish. Mafouta’s two goals brought the visitors back from 2-0 down, but the late penalty denied them a share of the points. The club’s next Ligue 1 fixture is away to Nice on September 5, 2026, when Sidibé’s disciplinary situation will be part of the immediate focus.
