Mamadou Sarr set to join Real Sociedad on season loan

The Senegal defender is set to leave Chelsea for a season-long Real Sociedad loan without a purchase option.

Mamadou Sarr is set to leave Chelsea for Real Sociedad on a season-long loan, giving the Senegal defender a chance to establish himself in LaLiga while Chelsea retain control of his future. The agreement will not include an option for the Spanish club to buy him permanently.

Sarr, 20, joined Chelsea in January after moving from Strasbourg but has made only seven appearances for the London club’s first team. With regular football not expected to be available to him at Chelsea this season, the move is intended to provide a stronger platform for his development.

Real Sociedad’s interest prevailed over an approach from Al-Hilal. The Saudi club’s project included the presence of Kalidou Koulibaly, another Senegalese defender, but Sarr chose the Spanish option. Xabi Alonso’s influence also helped shape his decision, despite the player not being part of the coach’s plans for the current campaign.

The move could give Sarr exposure to European competition, with Real Sociedad qualified for the Europa League. He is expected to use the spell in San Sebastian to gain experience and playing time before returning to Chelsea.
