Marseille will make no summer signings, says Genesio

Bruno Genesio says Marseille will make no summer signings unless departures create room for one or two arrivals.

Marseille will finish the summer transfer window without a new signing unless the club can first complete two or three more departures. Coach Bruno Genesio said there is only a possibility of bringing in one or two players after those exits, but he considers that difficult before Tuesday. He will therefore have to work with the squad currently available.

The announcement follows Marseille’s defeat by Monaco, their first loss of the Ligue 1 season. The result came after an opening 4-0 victory over Strasbourg, making the win look less convincing as the team struggled against a stronger and more settled opponent. Paris Brunner scored twice for Monaco, while Marseille failed to create enough clear chances to respond.

The club’s transfer restrictions are linked to major financial difficulties and the need to sell players to satisfy the requirements set by the DNCG. Igor Paixao was unavailable while his departure was being handled, and Tochukwu Nnadi was injured during the match. Several players were also showing signs of fatigue, adding to the pressure on an already weakened squad.

Genesio said Marseille must adapt to its resources while improving its coordination, intensity and finishing. The coach noted that the team improved after the interval and continued competing, but the schedule offers little relief, with Paris FC, Rennes, Besiktas and Paris Saint-Germain ahead.
