Mason Greenwood faces UEFA obscenity probe at Fenerbahce

Mason Greenwood is under UEFA disciplinary review after alleged obscene gestures during Fenerbahce’s win at Lyon.

Mason Greenwood faces UEFA disciplinary proceedings that could affect his involvement with Fenerbahce after conduct during the club’s Champions League play-off victory over Lyon. The investigation concerns an alleged obscene gesture directed toward supporters at the French club.

UEFA has opened a case against Greenwood, teammate Matteo Guendouzi and Fenerbahce following the second leg in Lyon. The match ended in disorder, with Guendouzi facing repeated insults from the home crowd and responding with gestures of his own. Greenwood also became involved, making a sign linked with Marseille rapper JUL before appearing to make an obscene gesture while looking toward Lyon supporters.

Fenerbahce said it would present its arguments and supporting material to UEFA’s disciplinary bodies, while defending the interests of both players and the club during the process. No sanction has been announced, but Greenwood could face punishment if UEFA finds that his conduct breached competition rules on proper behaviour.

A precedent exists from Euro 2024. England midfielder Jude Bellingham was fined €30,000 and received a one-match suspension, suspended, for a comparable gesture. UEFA’s disciplinary commission ruled that he had violated its basic standards of good conduct. Greenwood’s case will now be considered by the same governing body.
