Mason Greenwood set for Roma reunion in Champions League

Mason Greenwood’s first Champions League appearance for Fenerbahçe carries an immediate personal angle: he is expected to start against Roma, the club he came close to joining during the summer. Gian Piero Gasperini had made the England and Jamaica international a priority, but Roma’s financial constraints prevented the move from being completed.

Fenerbahçe secured Greenwood from Marseille for €39 million, with the 24-year-old signing a four-year contract. The Turkish club offered him a higher salary and completed the deal on July 14, placing him in the spotlight before his first European campaign with the team.

Greenwood has made 10 appearances in all competitions, starting seven, and has four goals and two assists. His Champions League record stands at two goals and one assist from six matches, including four starts, while he has added two goals and one assist in four Süper Lig appearances. He initially featured from the bench as he built up his fitness before earning a starting role.

He is also due to serve a suspended one-match ban and pay a €30,000 fine following the match in Lyon. Fenerbahçe’s coaching staff have considered using him either on the right wing or behind the striker, with his shooting and dribbling making him the team’s main attacking focus for the Roma fixture.
