Mattéo Guendouzi handed four-match UEFA ban

Mattéo Guendouzi has been suspended for four UEFA club matches and fined €50,000 after the disciplinary fallout from Fenerbahçe’s Champions League play-off against Lyon on 26 August. Two matches of the ban are subject to a one-year probation period beginning on the date of the decision. UEFA found the midfielder responsible for insulting people at the game, provoking spectators and violating its basic conduct rules.

The punishment means Guendouzi will miss Fenerbahçe’s opening four league-phase fixtures against Roma, Aston Villa, Slavia Prague and Liverpool. The incident escalated after Guendouzi’s behaviour inflamed tensions in the stands and between the players, ending in a wider confrontation. He had described his actions after the match as simple banter, but UEFA subsequently opened disciplinary proceedings.

Fenerbahçe were also fined €30,000 for pyrotechnics and €15,000 for crowd disorder, as well as €50,000 for the team’s breach of general conduct rules. Mason Greenwood received a one-match suspension and a €30,000 fine for a conduct violation, with his ban also carrying a one-year probation period.

Lyon were fined €48,000 for object throwing, €5,500 for pyrotechnics, €5,000 for crowd disorder and €50,000 for a breach of general conduct rules. Goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira was suspended for five UEFA club matches for serious physical misconduct, with two matches also covered by a one-year probation period.
