Mezian Mesloub turns heads after Lens breakthrough

Mezian Mesloub’s performance for Lens has intensified the international competition for his future, with Portugal, France and Algeria all possibilities for the 16-year-old midfielder. He currently represents Portugal at under-17 level, having previously played for its under-16 side, but he remains eligible for France, where he was born, and Algeria through his father’s heritage.

Mesloub entered in the 61st minute of Lens’ Champions League opener at Slavia Prague, replacing Franjo Ivanovic with his side 1-0 down despite playing against 10 men. Operating on the right, the teenager repeatedly asked for the ball, took on defenders and supplied crosses and forward passes as Lens recovered to win 3-2. He helped create Abdallah Sima’s goal and then delivered the left-footed cross for Florian Thauvin’s 2-2 equaliser in the 91st minute. Ruben Aguilar completed the comeback.

The appearance was only Mesloub’s fourth as a professional and made him the youngest Lens player to feature in the Champions League. Coach Dino Toppmöller praised his courage, responsibility and willingness to take possession in a difficult situation, while Daniel Riolo also judged his impact decisive despite some overly ambitious attempts.

Mesloub had already scored with his first touch in professional football against Nantes on 8 May, securing Lens’ second-place finish and direct Champions League qualification. The son of former Lens player Walid Mesloub signed his first professional contract this summer, with Benfica among the clubs already showing interest.
