Olivier Giroud leaves his Lille future unresolved
The 39-year-old Lille striker is under contract until June but has not decided whether to continue playing.
Olivier Giroud has yet to decide what comes next at Lille, leaving the veteran striker’s future open as his contract approaches its end. He is also considering a possible broadcasting role during the 2026 World Cup, but has not indicated that his playing career is over.
Giroud, 39, joined Lille from LAFC during the 2025-26 season after spells with AC Milan, Chelsea and Arsenal. He began his Lille stay with goals in each of his first two appearances, then endured a longer scoring drought before returning to form with a two-goal display against Paris FC. He also scored the penalty that gave Lille victory at Angers.
His form has followed Lille’s uneven campaign. A 4-1 defeat by Strasbourg was the club’s fifth consecutive loss and left the team six points from the Ligue 1 podium at that stage. Giroud was jeered by Lille supporters during that match, but responded with a penalty in the Europa League win over Freiburg and later helped the team beat Paris FC and Angers.
Despite a reduced role at times, coach Bruno Genesio has continued to regard Giroud as an important figure in the squad. The France record scorer retired from international football after Euro 2024, although he has said he could help Didier Deschamps in an emergency. His next decision will determine whether Lille remains the final club chapter of his career.
