Olympique Lyonnais must sell after Champions League exit
Lyon’s failure against Fenerbahçe removes vital income and raises the sales target needed to balance the club’s finances.
Olympique Lyonnais now faces a much more demanding transfer window after its Champions League elimination. With the club under scrutiny from the DNCG, the result removes a major source of income and forces a rethink of both sales and recruitment plans.
Fenerbahçe went through after a 1-1 draw in the first leg and a 2-1 victory in the return match. Lyon will miss out on a participation payment of at least €23 million. The club had planned to raise about €25 million through player sales, but that requirement has now risen to roughly €50 million as it seeks to restore financial balance.
Malick Fofana is the clearest potential source of funds. The Belgian forward is valued at €30 million, making him a leading candidate for a departure. Lyon could also consider offers for Czech attacking midfielder Pavel Sulc and Dutch defender Ruben Kluivert, both valued at about €20 million. American defensive midfielder Tanner Tessmann is another player who could leave.
Only after completing sales and stabilising its accounts will Lyon be able to consider a late addition to the squad. Any recruitment would depend on the remaining needs of the team and on the money generated before the transfer window closes.
