OM urged to sell Højbjerg as Rami questions his value

Adil Rami believes Marseille should sell Pierre-Emile Højbjerg as the club manages finances and wages.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has been judged expendable at Marseille, with former OM defender Adil Rami arguing that the club should consider selling the Denmark midfielder. Rami said Højbjerg is not essential to the current squad and linked that assessment to Marseille’s financial priorities.

The comments came after Højbjerg delivered a strong display in Marseille’s 4-0 Ligue 1 victory over Strasbourg on Friday, scoring one of the goals. His performance therefore did not alter Rami’s view that the player’s value to the team must be weighed against the club’s wider financial needs.

Højbjerg’s position at OM has already weakened in recent weeks. He lost the captaincy after declining a move to Newcastle this summer, despite negotiations between the clubs having come close to completion. His reduced standing has followed a period in which some observers have also questioned his importance to the Marseille squad.

Marseille are seeking sales to improve their finances. The club’s objectives are to bring in cash and lower its wage bill as it works to meet its commitments to the DNCG. Rami’s argument places Højbjerg among the players whose future could be assessed through that financial lens, even after his positive opening performance.
