Real Sociedad caught in chaotic Liga goalkeeper rule test
Real Sociedad’s late win was overshadowed by the first use of a new IFAB rule for injured goalkeepers.
Real Sociedad’s victory over Espanyol was overshadowed by a confusing first test of a new goalkeeper injury rule. Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo and assistant John Maissano were sent off during the dispute, while captain Igor Zubeldia received a yellow card after initially refusing to leave the pitch.
The incident came in the 92nd minute, with Real Sociedad leading 2-1 and having used all their substitutions. Álex Remiro required treatment, and the rule required an outfield player to leave instead of him when play resumed. The player must remain off the field for one continuous minute and can return only after the referee’s approval. In the protocol applied in this case, that player was the captain.
The measure is part of an IFAB trial for the 2026-27 season, aimed at preventing goalkeeper injuries from being used to disrupt matches or create an opportunity for tactical instructions. It is also being tested in several European competitions, including the Premier League and Championship. A second version allows the coach 10 seconds to nominate another outfield player.
The result mattered for a Real Sociedad side listed 20th with no points after two rounds, while Espanyol began the match ninth on three points. Sociedad’s preceding form included wins over Aston Villa and Wolves, but also a defeat by Pau FC and draws with Racing Santander and Espanyol. Espanyol had gone unbeaten in its listed five matches, with three wins and two draws.
