Rennes edge Le Mans 3-2 after dramatic Ligue 1 finish
Rennes defeated Le Mans 3-2 in a tense match shaped by a red card, two penalties, a late VAR review and outstanding goalkeeping.
Stade Rennais defeated Le Mans 3-2 after a dramatic finish that included a red card, two penalty incidents, a VAR review and ten minutes of added time. Rennes had to withstand a determined response from the visitors before Esteban Lepaul converted the decisive penalty. Le Mans appeared to have a late route back into the match, but that opportunity was set to be cancelled because of an offside position.
Lepaul was the first scorer and later became the central figure in the final stages. His second goal came from the penalty spot after referee Romain Lissorgue judged that a Le Mans defender had handled the ball. Lepaul sent the attempt to the goalkeeper’s right, where the goalkeeper also moved, but the strike still found the net. That gave Rennes the advantage after the game had reached 2-2.
The result was not secured without considerable pressure. Rennes struck the post through Ludovic Blas after Frankowski found space on the right and delivered a low ball into the area. Blas also saw a lob rebound off the crossbar after another well-timed run behind the Le Mans defence. A. Nordin missed the target in a further promising attack, then lost a one-on-one duel with Kocik after Blas released him through the centre.
Rennes finished with 15 shots, including seven on target, but Le Mans repeatedly stayed in the contest. Mousa Al Tamari tested Kocik with a shot that was saved, while another attempt from the Jordanian forward went narrowly wide after a loose Voyer pass. The visitors also defended several sustained attacks around their penalty area, including periods when they were playing with ten men.
That numerical disadvantage followed Djibril Sidibé’s dismissal. The former world champion had only just entered the match when he challenged Lepaul and caught the Rennes forward’s ankle with his foot. Lissorgue immediately produced a red card. Le Mans then had to protect the 2-2 score with a reduced team, while Rennes circulated the ball in front of the area and searched for an opening.
The goalkeeping changes added another layer to the match. Le Mans goalkeeper Kocik was hurt during a duel with Nordin and was unable to continue. Hatfout replaced him, despite having played only three Ligue 2 matches the previous season. On the other side, Lemaître was not expected to start for Rennes, but he made several important interventions, including an aerial save from a Lauray header deep into added time.
The late penalty awarded to Le Mans came after Mayenda fouled Rabillard in the area following a free kick. However, Rabillard had been in an offside position when the free kick was taken, meaning the penalty was expected to be overturned. Earlier, VAR had also examined a possible handball by Boissé after a Nordin volley. The effort itself had gone wide, and the review became part of an increasingly unsettled final period.
The teams had not met since Le Mans won a 2011-12 Coupe de la Ligue tie on penalties. In Ligue 1 meetings, Rennes had lost only once in 12 previous encounters, recording five wins and six draws. The latest result extended Rennes’ strong record in the fixture, although Le Mans showed enough attacking and defensive resilience to keep the match level until the closing stages.
The database lists Le Mans seventh in Ligue 1 2026 with one point from one match and a 2-2 goal record. Its recent sequence is also positive overall: wins against Nantes, Versailles and Bastia, a defeat by La Roche VF and a draw against Reims. The next scheduled league fixture is away to Nice on September 5, when Le Mans will need to recover from this narrow defeat and manage the absence created by Sidibé’s dismissal.
