Roberto Martinez opens door to Algeria coaching role

Roberto Martinez has entered Algeria’s search for a new national team coach and is prepared to pursue the position. The former Portugal manager’s interest could change a process that had been moving towards another leading candidate.

Martinez is attracted by Algeria’s pool of players and believes in the potential of the Fennecs. His willingness to join extends to financial terms: he would accept significant concessions on his salary to fit within the Algerian Football Federation’s resources. He is also ready to work with an Algerian assistant, a condition that could strengthen his candidacy.

The federation had placed Gustavo Poyet among the main finalists for the job. The 58-year-old Uruguayan is without a contract and has impressed officials with his international experience, strong character and established coaching record. His profile offers a marked contrast with that of Vladimir Petkovic, the previous coach.

Algeria’s recruitment process is therefore no longer centred only on Poyet. Martinez’s availability and flexibility have introduced a major alternative as the federation approaches its decision on the next coach of the Fennecs.
