Senegal reclaim Group F lead with Mali victory
Senegal share first place with Ivory Coast after a 97-71 win over Mali in the 2027 World Cup qualifiers.
Senegal have regained a share of first place in Group F of the 2027 Basketball World Cup qualifiers, giving their campaign fresh momentum after a difficult start to the fourth window. The result leaves the Lions level with Ivory Coast at the top and strengthens their position before the final stage of the group contest.
Senegal beat Mali 97-71 at Dakar Arena on Sunday. The victory was their second of the fourth window and their seventh in the qualifiers. It followed a narrow success against Angola, which came after their defeat by Egypt. Senegal therefore ended the window with two wins from three games and a clear response to the setback against the Egyptians.
The Lions controlled the game from the opening minutes and maintained their advantage through the contest. Their defensive solidity limited Mali’s chances of finding a route back, while their offensive efficiency allowed Senegal to build a decisive margin. The 26-point victory was the biggest result of their latest run and completed a positive turnaround during the window.
Senegal and Ivory Coast both have 16 points at the top of Group F. The fifth and final window is scheduled for February and will determine which teams secure qualification for the 2027 World Cup. Senegal now have one last opportunity to confirm their standing among the group’s qualifying places, but the shared lead means the final stage remains important.
