Stade Toulousain plans appeals over salary-cap sanction
Stade Toulousain is considering appeals after its salary-cap penalty rose to €2.725 million on appeal.
Stade Toulousain is preparing possible legal challenges after the French Rugby Federation’s appeal commission upheld a severe financial sanction against the four-time reigning French champions. The club says it is examining action before the French National Olympic and Sports Committee and the administrative courts.
The ruling of 27 August 2026 requires Toulouse to pay €2.725 million. The appeal commission accepted the club’s position on victory bonuses and found no salary-cap overspending during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. However, it increased the penalty for failing to meet general transparency and cooperation duties from €1 million to €2 million, while the remaining amount forms part of the total sanction.
Toulouse considers the decision legally unfounded and disproportionate, particularly because no breach of the salary ceiling was retained for either season. The club is also questioning aspects of the salary-cap regulations applied by the National Rugby League since the beginning of the case.
Any appeals would examine the rules under both French and European law. For Toulouse, the immediate consequence is an ongoing dispute over a major financial penalty despite the appeal commission rejecting the allegation of an actual salary-cap excess.
