Sunderland face scrutiny after Mukiele’s blunt verdict
Nordi Mukiele says Sunderland have lost their standards after a poor Premier League start under Régis Le Bris.
Sunderland’s disappointing start has turned into a question of standards after Nordi Mukiele openly criticised the team’s attitude. The defender said the squad was not doing enough in training and suggested that arrogance may have followed last season’s success. He also said the current side no longer resembled Sunderland at their best.
The warning came after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth, leaving Sunderland 19th in the Premier League with four points from seven matches. Kevin Danso was sent off in the 17th minute after being involved in Bournemouth’s opening goal, while another defensive mistake contributed to the second. The result leaves the Black Cats only above Tottenham in the table.
Sunderland finished seventh last season on their return to the top flight, with Régis Le Bris in charge. Much of that squad stayed despite interest in key players, including Granit Xhaka and Brian Brobbey, while summer additions such as Kevin Danso have yet to strengthen the team consistently. The club’s defensive performance has been a particular concern.
The schedule has also become heavier because Sunderland are playing in the Europa League, where they have won both matches. Their league programme has included Manchester City, Arsenal, Brighton and Brentford. Le Bris is not currently under the same pressure as Pierre Sage and retains enough credit to work on a recovery, but Mukiele’s assessment shows the squad must respond quickly.
