Sunderland: Le Bris welcomes Malick Fofana arrival
Régis Le Bris says Malick Fofana has settled quickly after Sunderland won the race for the Lyon winger.
Régis Le Bris has welcomed Malick Fofana’s arrival at Sunderland, saying the Belgian winger has already adapted to the squad after joining from Olympique Lyonnais late in the transfer window. The 21-year-old has trained with his new team-mates, giving the Sunderland coach an early view of a player the club worked hard to secure.
Sunderland initially agreed a deal with Lyon worth about €35 million, but Crystal Palace later offered close to €40 million and moved ahead in the pursuit. Fofana had also agreed to join Palace and reunite with former Lyon coach Pierre Sage before Sunderland re-entered the negotiations and completed the transfer. Leipzig, Roma and Arsenal were among the other clubs to examine his situation during the closing stages of the window.
Fofana had previously been viewed as a player Lyon did not want to sell. His departure became possible after Lyon’s elimination by Fenerbahçe in the Champions League increased the pressure on the club to raise funds and balance its finances. The move gives Fofana the chance to begin his Premier League career under Le Bris after a season disrupted by a long-term injury, which also kept him out of the 2026 World Cup. Sunderland will look to his speed, direct running and potential as he seeks to establish himself in England.
