Thierry Henry downplays Ronaldo's Portugal drama
Thierry Henry says Cristiano Ronaldo's latest Portugal dispute should not define the forward's remarkable international career.
Thierry Henry has played down the significance of Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure from Portugal’s camp in Denmark, saying the episode should not determine how the forward’s international career is judged. Ronaldo has not announced his retirement, despite questions over his future with the national team and his strained relationship with coach Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo, 41, remains Portugal’s record international appearance-holder with 234 caps and leading scorer with 146 goals. He plays for Saudi club Al-Nassr, and the latest dispute has raised the possibility that his time with the Seleção could be nearing its end. Henry said he was not involved in the internal discussions and that the matter was for Portugal to resolve.
The former France and Arsenal forward separated the current controversy from Ronaldo’s wider legacy. He said any criticism he had made of the Portuguese star concerned a particular match or situation, rather than the player’s entire career. Henry also highlighted Ronaldo’s sustained drive to improve, break records and remain among football’s best, calling that commitment central to what he achieved.
Henry placed Ronaldo alongside Lionel Messi among the players he deeply respects. He also recalled the effort Ronaldo made at the World Cup, which had appeared likely to be his final tournament, while stressing that one difficult episode cannot erase the extraordinary career that preceded it.
