Troyes beat wasteful Lorient 2-1 in Ligue 1 clash at Moustoir

Troyes secured their first Ligue 1 win of the season by beating Lorient 2-1, surviving sustained pressure after Renaud Ripart and Lucas Maronnier scored.

Troyes secured their first Ligue 1 victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Lorient at the Moustoir. Renaud Ripart opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Lucas Maronnier doubled the advantage with his first Ligue 1 goal. Lorient reduced the deficit through Makengo, but could not complete the comeback despite creating several clear chances late in the match. The result gave Troyes four points after two games, following their opening 0-0 draw with Paris FC.

Lorient started with greater control and spent much of the opening period in the visitors’ half. The hosts had 64 per cent possession after the first quarter of an hour and repeatedly looked for openings through Le Bris and Katseris. Their best early opportunity came when Le Bris delivered for Koné, whose first-time volley was brilliantly diverted onto the crossbar by Australian goalkeeper Beach at close range. Bernardeau also came close with a low, angled effort that went narrowly wide.

Troyes gradually turned Lorient’s dominance into a more direct threat. Ripart was denied by a defender after combining with Ifnaoui, then missed a close-range header from a Maronnier cross. The decisive moment came when Makengo was penalised for handball in the Lorient penalty area. Ripart sent Mvogo the wrong way from the spot to put Troyes ahead. The goal rewarded Troyes’ efficiency during a spell in which Lorient had controlled the ball but had not converted its pressure into a breakthrough.

The second goal arrived before the interval. Gomis allowed the ball to run for Picard, who produced a well-timed cross into the area. Antoine Mille got the decisive touch at the far post, diverting the delivery towards Maronnier. The former Guingamp player finished the move to register his first goal in Ligue 1. Troyes therefore went into the break two goals ahead despite Lorient having enjoyed the stronger start and produced more sustained possession.

Lorient responded with greater urgency after the restart. The home side forced Troyes deeper and began to attack the penalty area more often. One extended move saw a Koné shot stopped on the line by the Troyes defence before Makengo exchanged passes and finished past Beach to make it 2-1. The goal changed the rhythm of the contest, with Lorient increasing the pressure and Troyes relying on defensive interventions and the goalkeeper’s positioning.

Beach remained central to Troyes’ resistance. He held a first-time effort after a Katseris delivery and was also protected by Monfray, who made a decisive challenge against Katseris inside the area. Lorient continued to miss opportunities: Kouassi headed just over from a free-kick, Avom curled a shot narrowly wide after entering the box, and substitute Faye sent a volley off target after the defence failed to clear cleanly. Cadiou also lifted a Katseris cross over the bar.

The final stages brought further openings for Lorient. Talbi moved forward in search of an equaliser and headed towards goal from a Katseris flick, but the ball went into Beach’s gloves. Another Katseris delivery caused problems before Monfray intervened against Kasteris, while a challenge involving Makengo in the Troyes area was not judged to be a foul by referee Mr Souifi. At the other end, Ripart missed a close-range header that could have restored Troyes’ two-goal lead. Lorient’s late pressure was significant, but its finishing remained ineffective.

The defeat interrupts a strong sequence in Lorient’s recent results, which includes wins against Guingamp, Nantes, Concarneau and Metz, alongside a 2-0 loss to Le Havre. The database lists Lorient 10th in the 2026 Ligue 1 table with one point from one match and a 0-0 goal record. The match result will now be added to the club’s campaign, while Troyes move forward with four points and their first top-flight win since returning as Ligue 2 champions. The teams had not met in Ligue 1 recently; their last recorded meeting was on 14 February 2025 in Ligue 2, when Lorient won 1-0. Lorient’s next listed fixture is away to Lens on 5 September.
