UEFA Nations League: Ronaldo exit puts Portugal in turmoil
Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp after a dispute over his role, prompting talks with the prime minister before the Denmark Nations League match.
Portugal’s UEFA Nations League preparations have been overtaken by Cristiano Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from the national-team camp. The 41-year-old forward left after deciding not to attend another training session, following a public statement from head coach Jorge Jesus that defended the coach’s authority and selection decisions. The episode came before Portugal’s scheduled third group-stage match against Denmark on Thursday at 20:45.
The immediate trigger was Ronaldo’s reaction to being left on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 victory away to Norway on Sunday. The captain did not accept the decision to remain unused and was already at the centre of a dispute when Jesus held his press conference on Wednesday. The coach made clear that reputation would not determine his choices, even while acknowledging the importance of Ronaldo’s career and status within the team.
“Status is one thing, but the rules are the same for everyone,” Jesus said. “Status, because of his past, his career... We have to be careful, but I always decide according to the team’s objective.” He added that he was the person responsible for decisions concerning the team. His comments represented a direct assertion of authority at a time when Ronaldo’s position in the side had become the central issue around the squad.
Ronaldo did not join the training session that followed the press conference. He left Copenhagen’s stadium in a vehicle belonging to the Portuguese federation as his teammates were beginning their work on the pitch. He later departed the country on his private aircraft, turning a disagreement over playing time into a formal break from the camp before the Denmark fixture.
The forward explained his decision in a statement posted on Instagram. “After the press conference of the national-team coach, and following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the training camp,” he wrote. The statement referred to his discussion with federation president Pedro Proença but did not announce a definitive end to his international career.
The dispute has also reached Portugal’s political leadership. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro contacted Proença after Ronaldo’s departure and sought conversations with Jesus and Ronaldo. Montenegro is known to have a good relationship with Jesus, and the prime minister’s intervention placed the squad controversy beyond football’s normal administrative channels. The content of those exchanges has not been made public.
Ronaldo’s future with Portugal remains unresolved. A report in Portugal suggested that he could retire from international football, but no confirmed retirement decision has been established in the material surrounding his departure. His sister has criticised the treatment of a player regarded as a national-team legend, while sections of the Portuguese press have reacted negatively to his conduct. The disagreement therefore involves both the coach’s authority and the symbolic position Ronaldo occupies in the national setup.
The consequences were visible even before the match with Denmark. Portugal’s famous number seven had already been reassigned on Thursday, one day after Ronaldo left the camp. That decision underlined the speed with which the team moved towards its next fixture, despite the uncertainty surrounding its captain. It also ensured that the controversy would remain present when Portugal returned to competitive action.
For Jesus, the central question is whether the team’s structure can continue without allowing one player’s status to override selection decisions. For Ronaldo, the departure has created the clearest break yet between his standing as Portugal’s most recognisable player and the coach’s control over the squad. The scheduled Denmark match is now the next test of Portugal’s competitive focus, while the country waits for clarity on whether Ronaldo will return to the national team or bring his international career to a close.
