Youssouf Fofana explains Sevilla choice over Lyon

Youssouf Fofana says Sevilla’s early approach and his commitment decided a late move instead of joining Lyon.

Youssouf Fofana has explained why he joined Sevilla instead of Lyon, saying the Spanish club’s approach quickly convinced him that the move was right. His decision settled a late transfer uncertainty and saw the France international leave AC Milan temporarily for the Andalusian side.

The 27-year-old midfielder remains under contract with Milan until 2028 after making 88 appearances across two seasons with the Italian club. He joined Sevilla on loan during the final hours of the transfer window and made his debut three days before his presentation, featuring in a 1-1 draw with Espanyol.

Fofana said the first contact from Sevilla, made through his representatives, changed the direction of the negotiations. He felt wanted by the club and chose to give his commitment to the team that had shown the clearest desire to sign him. The agreement was then completed within a few hours, despite a tense dinner during the process.

The former Monaco player acknowledged that several clubs had been linked with him, including Lyon. He said the opportunity in Seville ultimately suited his situation at that moment and left him genuinely happy. Fofana also expressed his belief that the outcome of events is ultimately positive, explaining why Sevilla became his preferred destination after the Lyon option failed to materialise.
