Zidane faces France balance test with left-back dilemma

Zinédine Zidane’s first France team is taking shape, but its attacking promise comes with an immediate structural concern. The proposed 4-3-3 would give Kylian Mbappé freedom from the left, with Ousmane Dembélé centrally and Michael Olise on the right. The main uncertainty is behind Mbappé, where the left-back may be asked to cover a demanding defensive zone alone.

Andy Diouf is a candidate for his France debut after being identified for the role by Zidane. His club duties at Inter are different, with the player more accustomed to operating as a wing-back. Adrien Truffert is the alternative, although his international experience is also limited. Either choice would face difficult demands while Mbappé is encouraged to remain focused on attacking positions.

The concern extends into midfield. Rayan Cherki could join Adrien Rabiot and Manu Koné, but a turnover from Cherki in a relay role could leave the left flank exposed to overlapping opponents. The balance of the entire side would therefore rely on several players adapting to unfamiliar responsibilities.

The projected line-up is not final, and Zidane can still change his plans. The trip to Turkey will provide an early examination of the defence, especially given France’s 2-0 defeat in Konya in 2019. The attacking choices may draw attention, but the first decision at left-back could shape the team’s effectiveness.
