Zidane faces mixed verdict after France’s strong gathering

France finished top of its group, but the assessment revealed breakthroughs and concerns for Zidane.

Zinedine Zidane’s France leave the gathering with more options but several decisions still open. The main questions concern Kylian Mbappé’s role on the left, Ousmane Dembélé’s place and the integration of newer players. The assessments were broadly positive, but not unanimous.

France went through the four matches unbeaten, recording three victories and one draw to finish first in the group with 10 points, ahead of Italy on seven. Jérôme Rothen viewed the results as a platform for Zidane’s different playing principles and a more entertaining team, while acknowledging poor periods against Turkey and Belgium. Jean-Michel Larqué also praised the coach’s willingness to rotate heavily.

Two newcomers made the strongest impression. Larqué highlighted defender Jérémy Jacquet for his one-on-one defending, positioning and understanding with Dayot Upamecano. Lucas Da Cunha was credited with bringing energy to midfield and helping break defensive lines. Michael Olise also emerged as a major attacking reference, combining creativity, defensive work and the ability to produce decisive moments.

Esteban Lepaul’s future drew a more divided response. Rothen felt the striker looked short of the international level and might not return next time, while Souleymane Diawara wanted him assessed again after he created chances despite not scoring. Dembélé was judged below expectations, but both analysts resisted writing him off. His Ballon d’Or season, captaincy and Zidane’s appreciation of his work without the ball were cited as reasons for patience.
