Abdallah Gning suffers serious tibia fracture in Czech league
Senegalese forward Abdallah Gning faces a lengthy recovery after fracturing his left tibia for Baník Ostrava.
Abdallah Gning faces a lengthy period of treatment and rehabilitation after suffering a serious injury while playing for FC Baník Ostrava. The Senegalese forward’s absence will also deprive the Czech club of an attacking option for its next fixtures.
Gning, 27, started Saturday’s sixth-round meeting with SK Sigma Olomouc but was forced off after 13 minutes. He was trying to bring down an aerial ball when he landed badly and lost his footing, causing severe damage to his left leg. Medical personnel attended to him before he was taken to hospital.
Baník Ostrava later confirmed that Gning had fractured his left tibia. The club indicated that surgery was likely to be carried out within hours. The match finished with Ostrava winning 1-0, but the result was overshadowed by the Senegalese player’s injury.
The setback interrupts the former Stade de Mbour player’s campaign as he begins a long recovery. It also creates an immediate selection problem for Ostrava, which must prepare for its coming matches without one of its forwards. Gning’s treatment and rehabilitation will now determine when he can return to competitive football.
