France’s women’s basketball team will have to prepare for the 2026 World Cup without Alexia Chery, removing one of coach Jean-Aimé Toupane’s established players from the squad. The tournament is scheduled in Berlin from September 4 to 13, and Chery will also miss the rest of France’s preparation.

The 27-year-old interior felt discomfort in her thigh during training and underwent medical examinations at INSEP on Monday. Those tests confirmed that she could not continue with the national-team camp. Chery stands 1.90 metres tall and has made 120 appearances for France, giving the setback added significance for Toupane’s group.

Chery had only returned to the selection in March after an 18-month absence linked to maternity. She previously played for ASVEL and Villeneuve-d’Ascq and now represents Venice in Italy. Her withdrawal comes after the French federation announced its list of WNBA players for the tournament earlier on Monday.

Thirteen players had already gathered in Paris for a week of preparation. Alicia Tournebize, the 14th member of the group, had meanwhile left camp because of an injury. France will therefore continue its build-up without two players who were part of the initial gathering.
