Álvaro Valles explains penalty taunt aimed at Mbappé

Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles says he tried to unsettle Mbappé before saving his penalty against Real Madrid.

Álvaro Valles emerged as the decisive figure in Betis’ victory over Real Madrid after stopping Kylian Mbappé’s late penalty. The save capped a standout performance for the goalkeeper and gave him the main talking point after the match.

Betis won 1-0 through Troy Parrott’s goal, handing Real Madrid their first defeat of the season. Mbappé had the opportunity to level the match from the spot, but Valles kept out his attempt and preserved the Andalusian side’s result.

Valles said he had tried to unsettle Mbappé by speaking to him before the kick, while stressing that the exchange remained respectful. After making the save, he celebrated toward the stands. A teammate climbed onto him during the celebration, causing him to make slight contact with Mbappé. Valles then apologised and explained that it had not been directed at the Real Madrid forward, who accepted the apology.

The goalkeeper is now Betis’ established first choice after competing with Pau López last season. López has since moved to Andorra. Valles is preparing for another major test as Betis begin their Champions League campaign against Lille on Tuesday at 21:00.
