Amine Gouiri injury alarms Marseille before crowded Ligue 1 run

Amine Gouiri’s first official appearance under Algeria coach Brahim Hemdani lasted only 20 minutes on Friday. The Marseille centre-forward started against Zambia in the opening round of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, but was forced off after an incident with an opposing defender. Amine Chiakha replaced him as Algeria’s number nine left the field and took a place on the bench.

The exact nature of the problem remains unknown. One account described Gouiri as having been struck on the tibia after an opponent’s intervention. Images from the match showed the 26-year-old pointing towards his thigh before asking for a substitution, after which he sat with an ice pack placed on the area. Those figures underline his importance to the club’s sporting and financial planning, but the immediate issue is his fitness rather than his valuation or future.

For Algeria, the injury removed a forward selected to lead the line in Hemdani’s first official match in charge. For Marseille, the next step is the medical diagnosis and the decision over whether Gouiri can return to club duty or must begin another rehabilitation programme. Until those examinations are completed, the only confirmed facts are his 20-minute appearance, his forced substitution and the uncertainty surrounding the problem.
