Amine Gouiri Injury Raises Fresh Marseille Concern in Ligue 1

Amine Gouiri’s first official appearance under Algeria coach Brahim Hemdani lasted only 20 minutes. The Marseille centre-forward started against Zambia in the opening round of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, but was forced off after an intervention from an opposing defender. Amin Chiakha replaced him as Gouiri went to the bench with an ice pack on his thigh. Algeria won’t yet have a clear assessment of the problem, and Marseille must wait for medical examinations before knowing whether the incident will affect the club season.

Gouiri was involved in the match before his withdrawal and had shown his availability in the opening stages. The incident came as he attempted to avoid a challenge, after which he fell and pointed towards his leg while requesting a substitution. One account described contact around his tibia, while the visible treatment was applied to his thigh. No diagnosis or expected recovery period has been announced, so the extent of the injury remains unknown.

The timing has particular significance for Marseille because Gouiri has already missed a substantial period after an Algeria international break. In October 2025, he injured his shoulder against Uganda and later required surgery following several dislocation episodes. Marseille then announced a rehabilitation period of about three months, which also ruled him out of the Africa Cup of Nations. The latest scare therefore carries a familiar concern for the club, even though there is no indication yet that the current problem is comparable.

Gouiri is 26 and plays as a centre-forward for Olympique Marseille. He joined the club from Stade Rennais for €19 million during the 2024/25 season, having previously moved from Nice to Rennes for €28 million and from Lyon to Nice for €7 million. Marseille’s database lists his current market value at €28 million and records hamstring and muscle injuries in his medical history. Those details underline the importance of a precise examination, but they do not establish the nature of the injury sustained against Zambia.

His role has grown in Marseille’s attack at the start of this Ligue 1 campaign. Gouiri has scored four goals in five league appearances and also supplied one assist, making him one of the most productive players in the team’s forward line. The figures explain why his early departure was significant beyond Algeria’s qualification campaign. Any absence would remove a centre-forward who has been contributing directly to Marseille’s goals while the team has limited experienced alternatives in several positions.

The squad situation adds to the concern. Marseille’s summer window ended with 11 departures and no new arrivals to reinforce the group. Among those who left were Leonardo Balerdi, Mason Greenwood, Facundo Medina, Gerónimo Rulli and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The reduced squad has already made depth a recurring issue since the season began. Timothy Weah, in particular, has had few genuine options to ease the workload on the right side, while other positions also have limited experienced cover.

The schedule leaves little room for an extended recovery. Beginning with the away match at Troyes on 11 October, Marseille are due to play eight matches in 28 days. The sequence includes Troyes, Olympiakos, Angers, Sturm Graz, Le Havre, Toulouse, Bayer Leverkusen and Lens. Three of those fixtures are in the Europa League, adding European travel and midweek demands to the Ligue 1 programme. If Gouiri is unavailable, coach Bruno Genesio would have to manage that stretch without one of his main attacking options.

For Algeria, Gouiri’s injury also interrupts the start of Hemdani’s official tenure. He had been selected from the beginning for the new coach’s first competitive match, but his evening ended before he could make a sustained contribution. For Marseille, the immediate priority is confirmation rather than speculation. Tests will determine whether the problem is a short-term knock or a longer absence, while the club and national team wait to learn whether the latest international break will again carry a heavy cost.
