André Villas-Boas saddened by Marseille’s troubles
The Porto president says Marseille face dramatic financial problems and hopes the club can return to the Champions League.
André Villas-Boas has voiced his sadness about Marseille’s financial difficulties, calling the situation dramatic and warning that resolving it will take time. The FC Porto president believes the transfer market could form part of the answer as OM search for solutions to the problems affecting the club.
Villas-Boas was speaking during the Champions League draw, where his comments showed that he retains a strong attachment to Marseille. He coached OM from 2019 to 2021 and said he remains connected to the club. He also looked forward to returning to the Vélodrome and seeing people there again, while warmly greeting former Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, who was also at the draw.
For Villas-Boas, Marseille’s European status is central to the club’s identity. He said OM have a major history in the Champions League and hopes they can establish a lasting return to the competition. That ambition is being tested by the financial strain he described, leaving the club reliant on time and possible transfer-market solutions.
The transfer situation involving Quinten Timber illustrates the pressure around the squad. Porto are discussing the Dutch midfielder’s situation with his representatives, despite Villas-Boas giving no public confirmation when asked about the player. Timber joined Marseille from Feyenoord last winter and has made 16 appearances in all competitions, starting 15, without scoring or assisting. Marseille are seeking about €22 million for the 25-year-old, who remains under contract until June 2030, while several Premier League clubs are also monitoring him.
