Arsenal strengthen Premier League lead with fourth win

Arsenal remain top on 12 points after beating Sunderland 2-0 for a fourth consecutive Premier League victory.

Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League with a fourth successive victory this season. The defending champions now have 12 points from four matches, three clear of Manchester City in second place. City are due to play Manchester United in Sunday’s Manchester derby.

The leaders secured a 2-0 win away to Sunderland after a match in which goalkeeper David Raya played an important role. Raya saved Enzo Le Fée’s penalty in the 56th minute, preventing Sunderland from taking the lead. Two minutes later, substitute Bruno Guimarães put Arsenal ahead with a powerful effort that found the lower corner. His introduction at half-time, in place of Myles Lewis-Skelly, was one of Mikel Arteta’s key decisions.

Arsenal had further opportunities to increase their advantage. Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs stopped Saka’s attempt in the 74th minute, while Dan Ballard blocked Kai Havertz’s header a minute later. Jurrien Timber then saw a goal disallowed for offside in the 78th minute.

Saka finally added the second goal from the penalty spot in the seventh minute of stoppage time. The penalty was awarded after a foul by Reinildo Mandava, who was sent off following the incident. The result preserves Arsenal’s perfect league record and keeps them clear at the summit.
