Arturo Vidal attacks as Thierry Henry defends Ronaldo

Arturo Vidal criticises Portugal’s handling of Cristiano Ronaldo, while Thierry Henry defends the forward’s legacy.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s dispute with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has widened into a public argument over how the captain should be treated and judged. Arturo Vidal criticised the handling of the episode, while Thierry Henry urged observers not to let one incident define a career that has shaped Portuguese and international football.

Ronaldo remained unused against Norway despite warming up for an extended period. Jesus said the decision was based on footballing reasons and insisted that no player would dictate his choices. Ronaldo then left Portugal’s training camp and said he would later explain what he described as the truth behind his decision.

Henry said Ronaldo’s achievements were too significant to be reduced to the current controversy, particularly if the episode proves to mark the end of his international career. Former Manchester United team-mate Rio Ferdinand also called for greater respect for the striker and pointed to his continued goalscoring despite his age. Vidal went further, saying Jesus had mishandled the situation and that Ronaldo deserved recognition for his contribution to Portugal.

Portugal’s 4-2 win over Denmark brought support for Jesus from within the squad. Vitinha, Gonçalo Ramos and Nuno Mendes praised the coach’s methods and described a group moving together, while Mendes left open the possibility of Ronaldo’s return. Rafael Leão said the dispute was not for players to resolve. Jesus maintained that the episode would not split the team, called Ronaldo a Portuguese symbol and said he would discuss the matter fully later.
