ASSE hand Cathro a new option with Chico Lamba

Chico Lamba completed 90 minutes for Saint-Etienne, giving Ian Cathro a credible third centre-back option.

Ian Cathro has regained a credible third choice at centre-back after Chico Lamba completed a full match for Saint-Etienne against Sion. The defender’s return strengthens the coach’s options at a time when Julien Le Cardinal’s availability is uncertain and Sohaib Naïr is away with Algeria.

Lamba had not played 90 minutes since 17 January, making the friendly appearance his first complete game in 258 days. His progress is significant after a series of setbacks involving his adductors, hamstrings and a stress fracture. He had been brought in to play an important role in the Saint-Etienne defence but struggled to establish himself because of those interruptions.

Naïr and Le Cardinal have formed the established central pairing this season, leaving Lamba with limited opportunities. He came on for only the final four minutes against Metz before Cathro selected him for the entire Sion match. That workload does not automatically put him back in the starting XI, particularly if Le Cardinal is fit for Rodez, but it gives the coach a dependable alternative.

Lamba’s return could become more valuable if Naïr comes back from international duty fatigued or if Saint-Etienne takes precautions with Le Cardinal. After months spent trying to recover fully, the Portuguese defender has not yet reclaimed his place. He has, however, reopened the competition for it.
