Olympique Marseille lose Hojbjerg to early Denmark injury

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s early exit for Denmark adds to Marseille’s injury crisis with the club 17th in Ligue 1.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s injury has deepened Olympique Marseille’s midfield problems as Bruno Genesio prepares for a crucial trip to Troyes. The Danish international has started every one of Marseille’s five Ligue 1 matches this season, making his latest setback another blow for a team already struggling near the bottom of the table.

Hojbjerg was forced off after only 10 minutes of Denmark’s Nations League match against Wales in Cardiff. The 31-year-old midfielder, who began the game as captain, stopped after a run and sat down without any visible contact, appearing to have a thigh problem. He handed the armband to Joachim Andersen before Andreas Skov Olsen replaced him.

The incident adds to a difficult international break for Marseille. Derek Cornelius faces several months out after suffering a serious hip injury with Canada. Amine Gouiri returned early from Algeria duty with muscular discomfort, while Himad Abdelli came back with an ankle issue. Tadjidine Mmadi was also affected during France Under-20 duty.

Marseille’s league position has worsened the concern: the club is 17th after five rounds. A 1-0 friendly defeat by Ligue 2 side Montpellier in Martigues has added to the poor momentum. With the midfield depleted, Genesio must rebuild his double pivot and will hope Tochukwu Nnadi is available for the Troyes match.
