Bordeaux knocked out by Angoulême in French Cup

Bordeaux’s Coupe de France campaign is over at the first stage available to them, adding another setback to a club already facing major uncertainty. The Girondins must now focus on their unresolved ownership situation and a delayed return to regional football, with the proposed takeover by British fund Park Bench still awaiting approval.

Angoulême, a National 1 side, won 5-1 in the fourth round at Sainte-Germaine in Bouscat. Bordeaux went ahead in the sixth minute when Tom Pottier turned the ball into his own net, but Angoulême levelled almost immediately and then moved clear before securing a decisive victory.

The match was played behind closed doors, yet Bordeaux supporters still gathered in the stadium car park to follow the team and offer their support. Their presence did not alter the outcome as Bordeaux suffered a heavy cup exit in an already difficult period.

Bordeaux have also asked the authorities to postpone the start of their Regional 1 campaign. The club wants to begin on October 17, during the fifth round of fixtures, rather than on the scheduled weekend of October 3 and 4. The decision on that request remains part of the club’s wider effort to establish its next sporting and administrative direction.
