Breel Embolo leaves Rennes to join Atlanta United

The Switzerland-Cameroon forward has ended his Rennes stay after one season and signed for Atlanta until 2030.

Stade Rennais have lost Breel Embolo after just one season, with the Switzerland-Cameroon forward leaving France for Atlanta United in Major League Soccer. The move ends his time in Brittany and gives the American club a new centre-forward for its attack.

Atlanta will pay more than €15 million for the 29-year-old, who has signed a contract running until 2030. Embolo joins as a designated player, a status that underlines his importance to the club’s plans. Rennes had brought him from Monaco for €13 million during the 2025-26 season, but his stay has lasted only one campaign.

The transfer adds another chapter to Embolo’s journey through European football. He began at Basel before moving to Schalke, then continued with Borussia Mönchengladbach, Monaco and Rennes. His previous transfers included Basel to Schalke for €26.5 million, Schalke to Mönchengladbach for €11 million and Mönchengladbach to Monaco for €12.5 million. His market value at Rennes was listed at €15 million before the move. Born into a Cameroon-linked football background and representing Switzerland, Embolo now leaves Europe for a long-term opportunity with Atlanta.
