Champions League 2026-27 draw sets major tests for French clubs

PSG, Lille and Lens face demanding Champions League league phases, while Manchester City’s meetings with Barcelona and PSG add to the tournament’s intrigue.

The Champions League league-phase draw has produced major fixtures across Europe and a demanding programme for France’s three representatives. Paris Saint-Germain will face Barcelona and Manchester City again, while Lille have been paired with Bayern Munich and Arsenal. Lens, making the fourth Champions League appearance in their history, will meet Manchester City and Liverpool among eight opponents.

The new competition format returns for the 2026-27 season. The 36 clubs will be placed in one table rather than separate groups, with each team playing eight different opponents. Four matches will be at home and four away, with two opponents drawn from each of the four pots, including the club’s own pot. No team can face another club from the same country, and each side can meet no more than two teams from the same domestic league.

The complicated allocation will combine a manual draw with an automated system. Once a club is selected, software will determine its eight opponents while applying the country and league restrictions. The ceremony in Monaco also featured two former strikers, Thierry Henry and David Villa, assisting UEFA deputy general secretary Giorgio Marchetti. Henry received the UEFA President’s Award, while PSG captain Marquinhos received the first fair-play prize after consoling Arsenal’s Gabriel following the PSG-Arsenal final.

PSG’s schedule contains some of the most recognisable names in the competition. The French champions will play Barcelona, Manchester City, Roma, Aston Villa, Galatasaray, Villarreal, Slovan Bratislava and Como. The Barcelona meeting renews a recent European rivalry, while the City fixture brings another heavyweight contest. PSG are also listed as the competition’s double defending champions, giving the league phase added significance for Luis Enrique’s side.

Barcelona’s own route includes PSG and Manchester City, as well as Aston Villa, Sporting CP, Feyenoord, Galatasaray, Como and Sabah. The Catalan club began its domestic campaign with a 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao, a result that placed it at the top of the early standings in the available coverage. The result also kept Barcelona in the immediate domestic conversation with Real Madrid, who won 4-1 against Real Sociedad.

The Barcelona-Rodri storyline requires a clear distinction. Rodri is listed in the sports database as a 30-year-old Spanish defensive midfielder whose current club is Manchester City. That makes the City-Barcelona fixture a potential meeting between the midfielder’s current team and the Catalan side, rather than a confirmed Barcelona debut. Rodri’s transfer history shows a move from Atlético Madrid to Manchester City for €70 million in the 2019-20 season, after earlier spells with Villarreal and Atlético.

Rodri’s profile remains central to the City interest in the draw. He is valued at €55 million and has recorded groin and hamstring injuries in his career data. Manchester City’s eight opponents are PSG, Barcelona, Sporting CP, Porto, Napoli, Leipzig and AEK Athens, alongside Lens. The schedule therefore combines two French clubs, a major Spanish opponent, established Italian and Portuguese teams, and a demanding trip through the rest of the league phase.

Lens face City and Liverpool from the top pot, then Sporting CP, Club Bruges, Bodø/Glimt, Leipzig, Como and Slavia Prague. The pairing gives the French runners-up two of the strongest names in the tournament but also includes clubs from Portugal, Belgium, Norway, Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic. Lille’s list is equally varied: Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Real Betis, Roma, Galatasaray, Bodø/Glimt, Slovan Bratislava and Stuttgart. Their return to Europe’s leading competition will therefore include four immediate tests against Bayern, Arsenal, Betis and Roma.

The other headline fixtures extend beyond France. Arsenal will meet Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid will play Bayern Munich, and Liverpool will face Atlético. Inter Milan have drawn Liverpool, Real Madrid, Club Bruges, Dortmund, Shakhtar Donetsk, Feyenoord, Stuttgart and Slovan Bratislava. Real Madrid’s opponents include Inter, Arsenal, PSV Eindhoven, Roma, Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk, Linz and AEK Athens. The broad spread of opponents confirms the central feature of the league phase: every club receives a different route, with strong sides facing elite opponents before the knockout rounds.

The opening round is scheduled to begin around ten days after the draw, with the exact match calendar to follow. The league table will decide the next stage under the revised format, replacing the old group-stage race with a single competition-wide standings list. For PSG, Lille and Lens, the draw has already defined the scale of the task. For Manchester City and Rodri, it has placed Barcelona, PSG and Lens on the same European route, creating three different French and Spanish connections before a ball is kicked.
