Daniel Riolo ranks Benzema top three with one condition

Karim Benzema’s place among football’s greatest No 9s depends on the standard used, in Daniel Riolo’s view. The former Real Madrid striker can enter the historical top three when his complete record and trophy haul are considered, but not when the judgment is based only on influence and memories left by an attacker.

Riolo places Ronaldo Nazario and Marco van Basten ahead of Benzema on that second measure. The Brazilian’s arrival made an immediate impact, while Van Basten’s performances for late-1980s AC Milan created a similarly lasting impression. Benzema’s numbers are substantial: 897 club appearances, 486 goals and 205 assists, plus 97 caps, 37 goals and 20 assists for France. Ronaldo recorded 330 goals in 499 club matches, while Van Basten scored 277 in 373.

Benzema’s argument becomes stronger through consistency and honours. With Real Madrid, he won five Champions League titles, four European Super Cups and five Club World Cups, alongside other major trophies during his career. He also claimed the Ballon d’Or in 2022. Ronaldo won two Ballon d’Or awards and two World Cups with Brazil, while Van Basten collected three Ballon d’Ors and two European Cups. Benzema is currently without a club after leaving Al-Hilal.
