Edouard Mendy ends Senegal career at age 34

Senegal will have to begin the search for a new first-choice goalkeeper after Edouard Mendy announced his retirement from international football at 34. His decision closes the national-team chapter of a career that included major tournament success and creates an opening for the next generation of Senegalese goalkeepers.

Mendy won two Africa Cup of Nations titles with the Lions and played at two World Cups. The former Chelsea goalkeeper’s departure was unexpected for supporters, but it comes at a point when the team is also approaching a wider change in leadership. His exit removes one of the squad’s established figures and starts a succession question in goal.

Several other senior players are also entering the later stages of their international careers. Idrissa Gana Gueye is 37, Kalidou Koulibaly 35 and Sadio Mane 34, while Abdoulaye Seck is 34. Moussa Niakhate, 30, is another experienced member of the squad whose long-term place will eventually be part of that discussion.
