Ethan Mbappé emerges as Lille’s surprise package in Ligue 1 this season

Ethan Mbappé’s standout start against former club Paris Saint-Germain is pushing the 19-year-old Lille winger towards a larger Ligue 1 role after an injury-hit campaign.

Ethan Mbappé has moved closer to becoming a significant figure at Lille after an impressive performance against his former club Paris Saint-Germain. The 19-year-old started Friday’s opening match of the second Ligue 1 round and produced a display that surprised observers who had followed his difficult path into senior football.

The occasion carried an obvious personal element. Mbappé left Paris Saint-Germain two years ago to sign his first professional contract with Lille, and he faced a former dressing-room colleague in Warren Zaïre-Emery. Against a Paris side that had shaped his development, the Lille player looked comfortable rather than overawed. His performance has since become one of the early talking points of the French season.

His influence was particularly clear in the first half. He connected well with Lille’s attacking players, found useful spaces and showed the technical quality to move the ball forward. The performance was not built only on speed or direct running. It also reflected his understanding of when to move, when to pass and how to remain involved in the team’s structure.

Adil Rami described the display as exceptional and highlighted the player’s intelligence, movement into space, technique and passing. The former Lille defender also said Mbappé appeared confident and physically ready at the start of the campaign. Rami’s broader point was that Lille could regard the winger as a new addition, even though he was already at the club, because increased confidence and responsibility can change a player’s importance within a squad.

Walid Acherchour offered a similar assessment, rejecting the idea that Mbappé’s career had advanced simply because of his surname. He recalled that some people had mocked the young player and suggested he was present by chance because he was Kylian Mbappé’s younger brother. The performance against Paris gave Acherchour a different reason to discuss him: his connection with the team, his footballing personality and the progress he has made in Ligue 1.

Lille’s player profile lists Mbappé as a right winger, while his use under Davide Ancelotti has extended beyond that position. He has been selected on the right and also used as an attacking midfielder. That flexibility is important because it gives Lille more than a fixed wide option. It allows the club to place him closer to the ball or between the lines, depending on the demands of the match.

The available career record shows a steady progression through the Paris Saint-Germain system before the move north. Mbappé joined PSG’s youth setup from AS Bondy in 2017-18, moved into the under-17 side in 2021-22 and reached the under-19 team in 2022-23. Lille became his next step in 2024-25. He is now listed as 19, with French and Cameroonian nationality, and his Lille market value is recorded at €8 million.

That progress has not been completely smooth. Physical problems limited his regularity in the past, and his record includes two entries for a dead leg. The issue is relevant to his current opportunity because he has not yet established himself as an automatic starter. His performance against Paris, however, strengthened the case for giving him more responsibility and more consecutive involvement.

The significance for Lille is therefore larger than one strong match. Mbappé has provided evidence that an internal improvement can affect the club’s competitive resources as much as a transfer can. He still has to turn the performance into sustained form and secure a permanent place in the starting team, but the route is now clearer. For a player once discussed mainly through his family name, the next stage is to make his own performances the central part of the conversation in Ligue 1.
