Fabian Ruiz builds his Ballon d’Or case after double triumph

Fabian Ruiz has placed himself among the contenders for the Ballon d’Or after a season in which he became the only player to win both the World Cup and the Champions League. The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder says his performances in decisive matches give him a credible case, despite missing three months with a knee injury between January and April 2026.

Ruiz started PSG’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich and the final against Arsenal. He also entered Spain’s starting team from the quarter-final against Belgium, replacing Pedri. Those appearances have strengthened his claim as he seeks a higher finish than last season’s 24th place.

The 30-year-old accepts that attacking players often receive greater attention in the award vote. However, he points to Rodri’s victory two years ago as evidence that midfielders can prevail when their influence is recognised. Ruiz says his priority remains serving the team, while acknowledging that inclusion among the 30 nominees would already represent a significant achievement.

The final decision will be announced on Monday, 26 October. Ruiz’s case rests on his major honours and his role in the key stages of the club and international campaigns, rather than on individual statistics.
