FC Nantes moves to overhaul squad after third defeat

Nantes are bottom of Ligue 2 after three defeats, with Michel Der Zakarian under pressure and four recruits wanted.

FC Nantes has begun planning major changes after a disastrous start to its Ligue 2 promotion campaign. Michel Der Zakarian’s position is under serious threat, while the club is also preparing an urgent recruitment drive before the transfer window closes.

Nantes suffered a third straight defeat on Saturday, losing 5-2 at home to Rodez. The hosts had led at half-time after a Corredor double but collapsed after the interval. Earlier losses against Red Star and Laval had already left them under pressure. Nantes are now the only team in the division without a point and sit last in the table, a difficult position for a club still adjusting to relegation from Ligue 1.

The club has considered Antoine Kombouaré as a possible replacement for Der Zakarian, although the former Nantes coach is not enthusiastic about taking charge in the current situation. Grégory Poirier and Christophe Pélissier are also viewed favourably within the club. Der Zakarian’s future therefore appears uncertain after three matches.

Nantes also wants to reshape the squad rapidly. The club is seeking a central defender, a left-sided wing-back, a wide forward and a striker to address the weaknesses exposed by the opening defeats. The changes are intended to revive a promotion objective already in danger after only three rounds.
