France's UEFA ranking place faces growing Portugal threat
France remains fifth in the UEFA ranking, but Portugal is closing in and could reduce Ligue 1’s Champions League access.
France’s position in the UEFA coefficient ranking is under serious pressure from Portugal, with a fall from fifth place threatening Ligue 1’s access to the Champions League. The ranking determines how many European places are available to clubs from each country, making the battle more than a matter of prestige.
France currently has 12.583 points and sits fifth, while Portugal is sixth on 12.500. Germany occupies fourth with 17.125 points, leaving France well behind the country immediately above it. The narrow gap to Portugal means the fifth position is now the main concern for French football.
France has an important advantage this season, with seven clubs competing in Europe compared with five from Portugal. Those additional representatives give French clubs more opportunities to collect points and protect their ranking. Paris Saint-Germain has driven much of France’s progress over the past two years, but the challenge now extends across the country’s European entrants.
Pierre Ménès believes the campaign will be difficult for Lens and Lille in the Champions League, while Marseille and Lyon face a demanding Europa League schedule. He also identified Rennes, Monaco and PSG as clubs that will need strong runs, with France’s final position partly dependent on Portuguese results. Losing fifth place would leave France with six European clubs instead of seven and reduce Champions League access from four places, including one qualifying route, to three, with two direct berths and one in qualifying.
