France women open World Cup with emphatic Hungary win

France have made a forceful start to the Women’s World Cup, strengthening their status as contenders after a one-sided victory over Hungary in Berlin. The result gives the Paris 2024 Olympic silver medallists an early boost as they pursue a first world title and their first podium at the tournament since 1953.

The French took control immediately, leading 29-11 after the opening quarter and reaching half-time with 61 points. Hungary improved late and matched France 22-22 in the final period, but the damage had already been done. France also converted 15 of 35 attempts from beyond the arc and repeatedly disrupted their opponents with aggressive defence.

Dominique Malonga was named player of the game after contributing 17 points and eight rebounds. Marine Johannes and captain Gabby Williams also scored 17 points, with Williams making three of her five three-point attempts, while Valériane Ayayi added nine. Coach Jean-Aimé Toupane used extensive rotations as the game progressed without losing control.

The opening performance builds on France’s fourth-place finish at last year’s European Championship and seventh-place showing at the previous World Cup. South Korea awaits on Saturday, offering a more demanding second test after France’s dominant return to the competition.
