Germany lose Klopp home debut as Greece steal Nations League

Greece took control of Nations League Group 2 by winning in Germany, while Jurgen Klopp’s first match on home soil as national coach ended in defeat. The result leaves Greece two points clear of the Netherlands and adds to Germany’s recent frustration after their late draw with the Dutch three days earlier.

Germany had most of the ball in Augsburg but could not turn that control into a goal. The hosts held 76% possession and produced 16 attempts, compared with eight for Greece. Germany also had five shots on target, while Greece managed one, but the visitors made their only accurate effort count.

Greece scored in the 74th minute after a quick counter-attack opened space at the edge of the German penalty area. Dimitrios Kourbelis struck across goal, and the effort took a decisive deflection off Joshua Kimmich before entering the net. Germany pressed for an equaliser through added time but found no way through.

The defeat gives Klopp further work to do with a Germany side already struggling for consistency. Greece will host the Netherlands on Thursday, while Germany’s next fixture is against Serbia on October 1.
