Ismaïla Sarr: Sage explains Palace fans’ whistles

Pierre Sage has defended Ismaïla Sarr after sections of the Crystal Palace support jeered the Senegal winger during his return to action. The coach said the reaction was understandable because many supporters had expected Sarr to leave during the summer. Sage also stressed that the player’s return gives Palace an important attacking option.

Sarr made his first appearance of the season in Palace’s 4-0 Europa League victory over Lech Poznan, entering in the 74th minute. The result provided a positive start to the club’s European campaign, while Sarr’s late introduction marked his first competitive minutes after a lengthy injury absence.

The 28-year-old right winger joined Palace from Marseille for €15 million in the 2024/25 season. He had previously moved to Marseille from Watford for €13 million, following Watford’s €30 million purchase from Rennes in 2019/20. His earlier career also included a €17 million transfer from Metz to Rennes.

Sage said Sarr remains valued inside the squad and believes further playing time can restore his level. The Senegal international was Palace’s standout performer in the previous season’s Europa Conference League campaign, and the coach hopes he can reproduce that influence after returning to fitness. Sarr’s market value is listed at €40 million, although his immediate task is to rebuild his place on the pitch and with the supporters.
