Julián Alvarez faces Atlético backlash after Barcelona push

Julián Alvarez’s relationship with Atlético de Madrid supporters has reached a serious low after his stated desire to move to Barcelona triggered a hostile reception at the Metropolitano. The Madrid club is firmly opposed to selling the Argentina international, particularly to a direct rival, leaving the forward in an increasingly difficult position.

Alvarez came on in the 66th minute of Atlético’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal. His name was booed when the teams were announced, and the jeering continued whenever he received the ball. He later left the pitch alone with his head down, while some supporters threw a shirt at his face. The scenes reinforced the depth of the dispute between the player and the club’s fan base.

Atlético said his early departure from the stadium was intended to prevent further trouble after accusing him of provoking supporters with repeated lies. The club’s position means Alvarez remains tied to Atlético despite the growing hostility and his reported interest in Barcelona.

The dressing room has not presented a united response. Captain Jan Oblak has backed Alvarez as part of the squad for as long as he remains at the club. Diego Simeone, however, stressed that everyone representing Atlético must continue fighting for the team and competing for their place. Alvarez joined from Manchester City in the 2024-25 season for €75 million and is valued at €120 million by Atlético.
