Kalidou Koulibaly's handball sparks bizarre Al-Hilal penalty

Kalidou Koulibaly conceded a strange penalty for Al-Hilal, but Musa Barrow missed as his side won 5-1.

Kalidou Koulibaly’s extraordinary error briefly put Al-Hilal under pressure against Al-Khaleej, but the Saudi Pro League leaders of the occasion recovered to win 5-1 on Friday, 28 August. The Senegalese defender conceded a penalty in the fourth round, yet the opportunity was wasted and Al-Hilal ultimately secured a convincing victory.

The unusual incident came after goalkeeper Yassine Bounou played a short ball from a goal kick. Koulibaly appeared to act as if the restart had not fully resumed, then handled the ball inside his own penalty area. Hungarian referee Istvan Kovacs awarded Al-Khaleej a spot kick without hesitation.

Musa Barrow took the penalty for Al-Khaleej, but Bounou saved his effort. The stop prevented Koulibaly’s mistake from producing a goal and preserved Al-Hilal’s advantage. Al-Khaleej did find the net through Saleh Al-Amri, who scored the home side’s first goal, but that response did not lead to a sustained comeback.

Al-Hilal went on to add four more goals to finish with a 5-1 success. The result made the penalty miss a footnote in a dominant display, while Koulibaly’s error remained the match’s most unusual moment. For Al-Khaleej, Barrow’s failed attempt represented a missed chance to narrow the gap and put greater pressure on their opponents.
