Kyrian Jacquet's Tokyo run ends in the last eight

Kyrian Jacquet leaves Tokyo in the quarter-finals after Jaume Munar defeats him in straight sets on hard court.

Kyrian Jacquet’s run at the ATP tournament in Tokyo is over after the Frenchman was beaten by Jaume Munar in the quarter-finals. The result ends Jacquet’s progress at the Japanese hard-court event, while Munar, a player who came through qualifying, moves into the last four against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Munar, ranked 64th in the world, defeated the 86th-ranked Jacquet 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 41 minutes. Jacquet had three break points at 2-1 in the opening set but failed to convert them. Munar then put pressure on the Frenchman’s serve, eventually taking the decisive break at 4-3 after Jacquet had saved one opportunity. He secured the set on his own serve after earning two further set points.

The second set followed a similar pattern. Jacquet missed an immediate chance to break before Munar took the Frenchman’s serve in the next game. At 4-2, Munar broke again despite Jacquet saving the first break point, then completed the victory with his second match point. Jacquet’s defeat leaves Munar as the only qualifier to reach the Tokyo semi-finals, where he will face Alcaraz, the tournament’s top seed and world No. 3.

Alcaraz reached that stage after Denis Shapovalov retired during their quarter-final. The Spaniard had won the first set 7-6 (3) after a tie-break and led 2-1 in the second when the Canadian stopped because of a right hip problem.
